Meeste ekspats wat vir ’n kuier huis toe kom, het altyd ’n klein lysie van gunstelinggoed wat saam terug in die tas gaan. Gewoonlik Ouma-beskuit, Tennis-beskuitjies en natuurlik Mrs Balls. Die verlange huis toe kan mos maar rof raak.
Ek het onlangs gehoor van iemand wat R200 betaal het vir ’n bottel Mrs Balls oorsee! Toe besluit ek sommer: Nee wat, ek kan dit tog seker self maak!
Jy begin met gedroogde vrugte, ek gebruik appelkose, perskes en sultanas — dit gee daai soet basis en daai dik, konfyt-agtige tekstuur.
Dan vir die speserye: gemmer vir warmte, kaneel, mosterdpoeier vir die skerp smaak, en ’n knippie chili as jy lus is vir hitte.
Alles gaan in een pot. Bring dit tot kookpunt en laat dit dan stadig prut vir so uur tot 'n uur en 'n half. Roer nou en dan, en kyk hoe dit stadig dikker raak en die geure begin saamsmelt.

Jy soek daai punt waar dit nie meer waterig is nie, maar ook nie té styf nie — amper soos ’n growwe konfyt.
Proe is belangrik hier. As dit vir jou te suur is, voeg nog ’n bietjie suiker by. As dit te soet is, ’n splash asyn.
Dis die tipe resep wat jy kan aanpas soos jy gaan.
Wanneer jy happy is, bottel dit warm in skoon flesse.
Dis 'n moet vir n tradisionele braaibroodjie.

Top Tannie Tip:
Moenie bang wees om nog water by te gou as dit droog begin lyk nie.

Bestanddele:
250g Gedroogde Appelkos, fyn gekap
125g Gedrookte perskes/pruime, fyn gekap
100g Sultanas
150g Ui, gekap
10g Knoffel, fyn
10g Vars gemmer, gerasper
5g Mosterdsaad
1 klein Rooi brandrissie
250ml Appelasyn
100g Bruinsuiker
5g Sout
3g Kaneel
2g Gemaalde koljander
300ml Water

Metode:
Stap 1
Week die gedroogte vrugte in 150ml warm water vir 15min tot sag.
Stap 2
In ‘n diep pan, braai uie in olie tot deurskynend. Voeg dan knoffel, gemmer en mosterdsaad by en braai tot geurig.
Stap 3
Voeg die gedroogte vrugte(en water), asyn, suiker, sout en speserye by en roer goed deur.
Stap 4
Gooi nog 150ml water by en bring tot kookpunt. Verlaag dan die hitte en laat prut vir 30-45mins tot verdik.
Stap 5
Laat die blatjan effens afkoel en plaas in jou bottels. Geniet!
